An ophthalmologist for 1.2 million inhabitants. As with many other health problems, prevention is the watchword, even for the eye diseases and conditions. In northern Uganda, however, in particular in the districts of Kitgum, Lamwo and Arua – involved in the project – there is only one ophthalmologist for a population of 1.2 million inhabitants, in addition to the 190,000 refugees from South Sudan. Your ambassador Massimiliano Mazzanti, stressed the premise of the project, which will last for three years, and that is that 75% of vision problems would be easily solved if treated timely. “Prevention and awareness are essential to tackle the problems of vista”, has annotated the minister of health of Uganda, Joyce Moriku Kaducu.

The project . In northern Uganda, the prevalence of visual disability is the highest in the Country. It is, therefore, going to Doctors with Africa Cuamm, to improve the access to and quality of hospital services for persons with sight problems, with a particular attention to disabled, women, and children, who in rural areas are often excluded from this type of care. In view of the lack of ophthalmic services in the region, the Hospital of Saint Joseph of Kitgum, the district of Arua and the Ministry of Health of uganda requested the intervention of Doctors with Africa Cuamm in partnership with CBM Italia, according to a scheme already experienced in other african countries.

The training of the staff. the Training of health personnel and the decentralisation of services from hospital to the community are two important elements of the project, to reach segments of the population who do not currently have access to eye care services. Also provided for structural works within the hospital of Saint Joseph of Kitgum to transform it into a health centre ophthalmic and II° level, and the equipment of the hospital Arua to enhance the provision of services for ophthalmic surgery and treatments specialist. Are 76.521 patients the project plans to treat and to visit in three years.
