The book
In a valley in a forest to discover a couple of teenagers, an old car that is semi-overgrown by bushes. In the trunk you will find an almost mummified corpse. The police has identified the dead quickly. It is a private detective from Edinburgh, who disappeared twelve years ago. The former investigations could not clarify the case, the parents of the Missing have accused the police today, blundered and have a lot to cover up. In the new study, therefore, it is also important to clarify what went wrong. Some of the Participants are now retired. John Rebus. “A house full of lies” is of the 22. The novel, in which the Scottish author Ian Rankin makes his hero Rebus occur, where more of his long-time assistant Shioban Clarke is the main character. Rebus, in the last decades in the highly successful novels in a constant battle with alcohol and against his superiors, bored as a pensioner. His health is deteriorating, he can no longer smoke, no longer drink. He’s out walking his dog. And he sucks his successor, by he to interfere uninvited in their work.
“Believe me, we have learned a lot from the Mess and the Scandals of her Generation.”
Thus, in the case of the dead private detective. Its Disappearance brought back in connection with the gay scene, and seemed not to try very hard to clarify. In fact, some police officers at the time, not just a little messed up, but may have been involved, even in the case.
Rankin’s latest story is moderately exciting, but especially thanks to interesting characters and dry sense of humor entertaining. A Central theme of the book is the change in the work of the police in the course of time, and the new media: “at that Time there were not so many Laptop warriors. It was easier to control the flow of information, to influence them, which terms to be handled and what should remain unsaid”, notes Rebus once. “Oh, my God, is it really only twelve years? Seems to me like a different era.” And Shioban Clarke to pflaumt another Retired: “Believe me, we have learned a lot from the Mess and the Scandals of her Generation.”
The Scottish police authorities seem to be in the novel in a kind of self-destruction. Meanwhile, the Gangster look to the future with confidence: “Brexit is a gold mine for the disaster capitalists”, rubs his Big Ger Cafferty, the old opponent of Rebus, hands.
