On Tuesday sworn Abdelkader Bensalah, speaker of the algerian parliament’s upper chamber, in as the temporary president with the explicit purpose to bring about a national election. Now he has declared a national choice for the 4th of July.

On Wednesday, the military’s supreme leader, chief of staff and general Ahmed Gaïd Salah, battle for the role of the military in the transitional period. Historically, it has been absolutely crucial.

, said Ahmed Gaïd Salah in a statement from the department of defense, where he expresses support for Abdelkader Bensalah.

He further says that the republic’s laws to be followed, and that governmental institutions should be structural integration and issues at the same time a warning for the “slogans aimed at moving the country toward a constitutional void and destroy the state institutions”.

”When this new phase begins, and the marches continue, we regret that it has begun to be attempts by some foreign forces. . . in order to destabilize the country,” says Ahmed Gaïd Salah in a statement, without specifying.

Thousands of people gathered for protests in the capital Algiers on Wednesday, with demands for more far-reaching reforms. The slogans were directed against the interimspresidenten Bensalah and for a “free Algeria”.

The candidature was withdrawn, and elections were postponed, but the protests died down not and last week it was announced that the 82-year-old Bouteflika departs.
