With a lead of almost 10 percent over the SPD and the Greens, the Christian Democrats clearly became the strongest force in the repeat elections in Berlin. According to a survey by the opinion institute Forsa, the majority of Berliners have little understanding for the fact that the government mandate of the CDU is not unreservedly accepted by the representatives of the losing parties.
Only a small minority of 15 or 10 percent believe that the SPD or the Greens have a mandate to form the new city government. Even among the SPD voters, more than half believe that the task of forming a new Senate is not in the hands of the party they have elected, but of the CDU, which won the election.
A majority of all Berliners and half of the SPD voters are in favor of the SPD no longer continuing the previous coalition with the Greens and the Left, but forming the Senate together with the CDU.
