So far, New Zealand has played little role in the struggle between the powers for world order. In the summer, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen euphorically announced a trade agreement with the island state. Many goods will soon be allowed to go duty-free to Europe and vice versa. Von der Leyen called the agreement “historic” and spoke of an “important geopolitical moment”.

New partnerships at the other end of the world are in demand.
