When we now enter 2019, there is once again a feast for the nyttårsforsetter. Many have the ambition to start a new and better life, which not infrequently involves a desire for health improvements. Paradoxically, people have never lived longer than we do right now. What are then the causes that life expectancy increases? How long can we live? And why shall we waste billions of dollars on undocumented health food when the best helserådene is as good as free?

the Summer of 2018 was my grandmother 100 years. She is thus in a historical company. Last year, we passed a magical threshold with over one thousand hundreåringer in this country. We have never lived as long as we do now, and never has been 100 years. The life expectancy in Norway is closer to 81 years for men and about 84 years for women, and is expected to increase further in the years ahead. How long can this continue? How old can we be? And is “eternal life” is something we really want us, and if so at what price?

Among the various animal species , there is a reverse relationship between hr and life expectancy. A mouse has a resting heart rate of around 600 beats per minute and lives in just over two years, while the blue whale has a resting heart rate down to ten beats per minute and can be over a hundred years. Out of this context would man, with a resting heart rate of around 70 bpm, is expected to be about 40 years.

This was indeed the case until the early urbanization, around the year 1750. Improved living conditions, advances in hygiene and nutrition, in addition to combating infectious diseases and the prevention of heart and vascular diseases, are the main reasons why we today live more than twice as long as our ancestors.

Effective prevention and treatment of fatal cardiovascular diseases is probably the main reason for the increased life expectancy in the last 40 years. The effect of preventive measures is about twice as large as the effect of the emergency medical treatment when the injury first happened. One of the most important changes in the population is the dramatic decline in the number of daily smokers, which is now at a record low.

characteristic by nyttårsforsetter is unfortunately that they often are too ambitious to persist. So, you should first create yourself a new year’s resolution, it is important that it is feasible. For those who still smoke, should this year’s new year’s resolution will definitely be to stub out the cigarette for good. It is probably the most effective enkelttiltaket you can do for your health.

For all others your objective should be to live a little healthier than last year. It helps unfortunately small, with a couple of hefty spinningtimer in January, that struggle you all the way out and provides everything other than the taste. Unless you are already an active exerciser, you should therefore bet on to move a bit more in the coming year. The health effects of physical activity actually comes by far less effort than we previously assumed. Start with a short, daily evening stroll – like to some quick walk so you get your pulse rate up. Select a travel companion and a fast track that makes you actually want to continue the whole year through. Eat an extra fish meal a week, and an extra portion of fruit or vegetables in the course of the day. If you also have a control on cholesterol and blood pressure, you have already done a lot for your health. Do you feel in addition to fresh, there is little reason for health concerns.

Almost no teenagers smoke.- A fantastic decline

These simple tips is something we actually know, from the big befolkningsstudier, prolongs the life . At the same time, we know that the norwegians use around three billion annually on the health, without any documented effect. This is money straight out of the window, which you can spend on great experiences together with those you love.

Although more experience to be a hundred years, there is much that suggests that we are approaching a limit to how long we can live. Life expectancy among those who first have been a hundred years, look namely not to increase. At the same time, there are many who die far too early, both of heart and vascular diseases and of cancer. Also in the past year we have seen a sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes. Much can be done to prevent these deaths already with the current treatment, we only know about the people at an early stage.

Knowledge our unique genetic code, combined with data about who we are, where we come from and how we live our lives, can give completely new possibilities to predict future disease. The purpose is to identify risikopersoner and predict who will benefit from a given treatment, without sykeliggjøre and overbehandle people who will never develop disease. The phenomenon called precision medicine or “presisjonsmedisin”, and could revolutionize current medical practice.

the Future prevention and treatment has the potential to be “tailored” to the individual patient. In addition, the prospect of financial savings for the community tremendously. The major challenge in this medical development is the concern for privacy. Today’s data protection law goes on patient safety loose, and the time is overmoden for a thorough public debate. This problem is illuminated in the aftermath of Aftenposten’s series of “Implanted” this fall, and have the medical and societal ripple effects far beyond the screaming need for a national pacemakerregister.

We live therefore, healthier than ever and living longer than ever before. Knowing this, we should continue with the advice that actually has evidence of efficacy – and instead use the money that goes to unnecessary health foods and alternative treatment on something nice. In a modern world, we must at the same time relate to the technological and medical progress has happened, and thoroughly assess a desire to take part in these possibilities up against the concern for privacy. The latter is something each and every one of us should think about in the new year, and some of the politicians as soon as possible should take seriously. Good new year’s resolution!
