Cecilia Monzón lost her life on May 21 in the Mexican municipality of Puebla, where she lived and practiced her profession as a lawyer specializing in criminal law, always defending the rights of the most vulnerable. Two assassins shot her dead when she was on her way to work.
Cecilia was a strong defender of human rights. Cecilia fought for the freedom of all individuals. Ella Cecilia claimed the right to dignity and equality. Cecilia was a reference in the fight against gender violence, against economic, social and political violence. Cecilia has given her life to denounce injustices, inequalities, to confront those situations that violated freedoms. And for fighting them from the position of her lawyer.
Cecilia was the mother of a three-year-old boy. She was a daughter, a friend. She had thousands of pending personal and professional projects. Cecilia Mozón was also the sister of our colleague Helena, to whom she was united by her firm commitment to the defense of human rights: Cecilia, from the point of view of criminal law; Helena from a job perspective at the CMS office in Barcelona.
An irreparable, unfair and absurd loss. One more sample of gratuitous violence to which we must never resign ourselves and that should inspire us to build a better society together where dialogue and coexistence prevail: in Ukraine, in Uvalde, in Puebla… in any corner where it manifests itself.
The writer Isabel Allende said: “Death does not exist, people only die when they forget it; if you can remember me, I will always be with you”. This is the commitment that we assume with Cecilia: we will not forget that she lost her life for exercising her profession in defense of human rights, giving a voice to those who do not have one. We will not let her legacy be forgotten.
