Nicaragua has released a number of people imprisoned since last year after they protested against the government in the country. A dozen opposition activists were released on Wednesday, according to the human rights organisation, CPDH.
this is done at the same time as the regime to begin talks with the opposition in the country to resolve a prolonged political conflict. Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega should not have participated in the talks, but instead were representatives from the government on the spot.
in Nicaragua last year, when plans for a later scrapped change of the country’s pension system sparked protests. The demonstrators demanded, among other things, Ortega’s resignation. At least 320 people were killed as a result of harsh reprisals from the government and hundreds were detained.
Alex Vanegas, a marathon runner and strong critic of Ortega was arrested in november is one of those that was released.
