Scientists have discovered that previous estimates of how fast the magnetic north pole moves is no longer sufficiently precise. On Monday presented the american and british scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration a new mapping of the earth’s magnetic field.
Since 1831, when for the first time, a magnitude of the magnetic north pole was located in the arctic part of Canada. Since then, it has moved approximately 2,300 kilometres to Siberia and closer to the now Russia increasingly faster. Since the year 2000 has the speed increased from around 15 kilometers to 55 kilometers per year.
of the magnetic north pole is a problem for the compasses in mobile phones and some other electronics used in everyday life. Even aircraft and ships are dependent on knowing where the magnetic north is, mainly as a back up for navigation. Gps, however, are affected not because they are satellite based.

Even the u.s. military use the magnetic pole for navigation. Military runways are named according to the direction in relation to poland and changed when it is moved.
the Researchers usually update the magnetic north pole location every five years, but this update is early because of the faster movement.
”the Cause is turbulence in the earth’s liquid outer core. There is a hot liquid sea of iron and nickel in the planet’s core where the movement generates an electrical field,” says geophysicist Daniel Lathrop at the University of Maryland to The Guardian.
