they are an integral part of every Star Wars film: people float digital in the room, talking and touching, as if they were actually present. In doing so, you are actually on a far away planet. British scientists at the University of Sussex have now developed a technique that could help make such holograms a reality. She reports in a study published in Nature.
in the Middle of the room, you can have a virtual colorful butterfly fly, or a small, rotating world sphere. Behind an amazingly simple technique. What looks to the human eye as a free-floating object, is, in reality, a single small plastic ball with a diameter of one Millimeter, the whizzes at speeds of up to nine metres per second, back and forth.
“We have old televisions for inspiration, which left Hiking a single-colored light beam, so quickly that the brain took it only as a single image,” explains lead author Ryuji Hirayama in a communication of the University. “Our prototype works in the same way, by chasing a colored particle so fast through space that it appears to the naked eye as a three-dimensional image in the middle of the air.”
sound allows the hologram to float
For the human ear inaudible ultrasonic waves to let the beads fly and steer it. Anyone who has stood in the Disco once in front of the bass Cabinet, knows the power of the exercise sounds to objects. The bead is trapped between two sound waves, from above and below. So, the scientists can draw it so fast that it seems to be everywhere at the same time. In combination with coloured light, the Illusion that a butterfly would fly emerges through the room.
other, already more sophisticated devices can use various screens, or laser, an object, some radiation in the room. What is new is that viewers can touch the hologram and listening to – at least almost. For the sensory experience, additional sound waves that everyone can feel on the skin, holds his Hand in the vicinity of the hologram. Here, too, the Disco principle applies again. Directly in the hologram is, however, not possible: The beads would fall out of its orbit and the Illusion would be gone.
The computer-animated holograms are smaller than a Hand.
The request, as in Star Wars to communicate via holograms with far-away people, must therefore probably be a while yet unfulfilled. The device with which the British scientists produce their holograms, is slightly larger than a Toaster, the computer-animated holograms even smaller than a Hand.
Nevertheless, you do not expect, that your technique remains just a Gimmick for sci-Fi Fans and gamers, but also the science can advance. So researchers could use, for example, the same principle, in order to mix chemicals without contamination by touch. Just in laboratories that work with dangerous substances, this could be a helpful tool.
