The U.S. Department of agriculture (United States Department of Agriculture, abbreviated USDA) has explained its controversial practice was finally over. The cats were part of the research on toxoplasmosis, an infectious disease that affects mostly cats. The organization of the White Coat Waste Project, which is active against animal testing , had criticized the research in a last month a report published in focus.
In the report, it was said, for the research project up to 100 cats would be bred annually. At the age of eight weeks, kittens will be fed with raw meat with toxoplasmosis pathogens. The animals would then, after a few weeks, immune, and you and burned would be killed. This practice is “unnecessary and unjustifiable”, criticized the animal rights activists.
From the meat market in the bowl
according to The report, the Ministry had also buy hundreds of animals from “Asian meat markets” and kill to feed their Remains back to the lab in Maryland to cats.
the experiments by the agricultural research service (ARS) of the Ministry were carried out. The Ministry reported that since last September, no cats with toxoplasmosis pathogens, infected or killed. The 14 healthy cats that are still alive in the labs, should be adopted by employees.
In the waste of history
Anthony Bellotti, founder of the organization White Coat Waste Project, the wasteful state, turning combat expenditure on animal testing and a year-long campaign against the experiments had led, described the step as “a historic victory for taxpayers and the animals.”
After more than 3 killed’000 kittens and $ 22 million had been squandered, is very pleased with his organization the “wise decision of the USDA to end their taxpayer-funded cat experiments final and to adopt the Survivors,” said Bellotti, and added that he was “thrilled” that the “kitten slaughterhouse” was banned in the garbage of history.
