Georges Mikautadze Confirms Transfer Away from FC Metz

Georges Mikautadze will not be staying with FC Metz. The Ligue 1 relegated team recently decided not to exercise the buy option included in the loan agreement with Ajax, meaning the forward will have to play in the second tier of France without him. Mikautadze confirmed this in an interview with a Georgian media outlet quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

“I will be playing in Ligue 1 again next season, I can confirm that,” the 23-year-old striker stated. “I will stay in France, but I do not yet know which club I will be playing for. That will be clear soon.”

In the summer of 2023, Mikautadze was one of Ajax’s major signings under then-sporting director Sven Mislintat, with a transfer fee of sixteen million euros (excluding three million in potential bonuses). However, his time with the Amsterdam club did not go as planned, leading to his departure in the winter transfer window.

He returned to Metz, reaching an agreement with Ajax for a loan deal that included a buy option, which was later exercised at the end of May. Mikautadze became the property of les Grenats again for thirteen million euros, likely to take advantage of his increased market value.

His return to France proved to be highly successful, as he scored twelve goals and provided three assists in nineteen appearances for the club. Metz now stands to make a profit on the transfer due to his excellent form.

AS Monaco is one of the clubs rumored to be interested in Mikautadze. With Wissam Ben Yedder leaving this summer, Monaco is in search of a new attacking leader. The extent of their interest is unknown, but given Mikautadze’s description, Monaco’s Ligue 1 status aligns with his preference.
