For the first time ever an american parliamentarian worn a muslim headscarf in the us house, the House of Representatives.

Ilhan Omar was born in Kenya, but came 23 years ago to the UNITED states as a refugee. The 37-year-old democratic politician was at the midterm elections in november elected to the UNITED states 116. Congress as one of the first two muslim women ever.

And a change of the us parliament’s rules of procedure have now made that Omar could wear the traditional headgear, the hijab, in the chamber.

In the 181 years, the House of Representatives otherwise maintained a rule that prohibited members to wear any form of headgear in the chamber. Originally secured the rule, that the men of the parliament had left their hats outside. But a democratic majority in the house chose, in connection with the new Congress to change the old rules of procedure.

‘As a child I was my grandfather’s interpreter at our local elections. And he was the first that got me interested in politics. I wish he could be here to see this historic moment, but he was in the spirit when I laid my hand on his quran for the ceremonial indsværgelse.’

The other newly elected muslim woman Rashida Tlaib, was sworn in as a member of the house by putting a hand on an English translation of the qur’an from 1734, which belonged to the former president Thomas Jefferson.

Congress now has 102 women, the highest number ever. Among the newly elected from the Democrats are both muslims, latina, black as well as women of native american descent.

in turn, consists of the Congress on the Republican side, it remains primarily of white men. In all, only 13 republican members of the women. A decrease of 10 from before the midterm elections.
