“Snabbklappen can be a climate villain”
“On the way to the christmas dinner, but forgot to buy a christmas gift? For many this is chokladasken a quick fix when there is a missing gift.”
“But beware that you do not give away a pinch of klimatförstöring. Several chokladaskar contains palm oil and whose plantations beats out the vital rainforests.”
“It is common that the chocolate contains palm oil, says Maria Rydlund, expert at the Swedish society for nature conservation.”
“– is often found in the fillings and chokladkonfekt, in wafers, for example. The oil makes, inter alia, that chokladöverdraget not smear as much. It has, in principle, the solid form at room temperature, and give no taint, but is tasteless. So the demand for palm oil is huge, and growing, ” she says.”
“the palm oil will not completely disappear, think Maria Rydlund. But it doesn’t actually matter how we as consumers behave. An EU-regulation, from 2014, indicates that producers have to indicate which oils a product contains, look at the table of contents.”
“TT: If I get a box with palmoljechoklad, should I toss it?”
” No, you don’t need to boycott or throw away anything. But talk about it! Let it be a topic of conversation at the christmas table. Our consumption affects our world and its survival. How can I reduce my footprint? said Maria Rydlund.”
“palm oil is extracted from oil palms that are grown on plantations, particularly in Malaysia and Indonesia. To give place to plantations are devastated huge areas of rainforest and frequently used pesticides which are banned in Europe in the production.”
“– It is not sustainable in the long term. It leads to climate change and the trees out-competing other important agriculture. In Borneo disappearing forest areas that are extremely important to the orangutans, that are not available anywhere else in the world, ” says Maria Rydlund.”
“There are other hot products this christmas to see up with if you want to avoid palm oil. This applies to both tapers and treats like ice cream and candy.”
“– It is also common in gingerbread and other färdigbakade cakes.”
“Ecological variation is the”
“the Swedish society for nature conservation gives the green light for the ecological palm oil, but it is still unusual.”
“– Yes, it comes in very small volumes. There is also a RSPO-certified oil, the Roundtable on sustainable palm oil, but it is drawn with many problems and shortcomings, we believe, and certification should be strengthened, ” says Maria Rydlund.”
“Her tip is we become more observant in the store or bake more of our goodies for ourselves.”
“– And so we should all consume less, general.”
