Steffen De Schuyteneer has claimed victory in the fifth stage of the Giro Next Gen. The 19-year-old from East Flanders, riding for Lotto Dstny Development, was the fastest in a mass sprint.

The stage from Bergamo to Cremona covered 138 kilometers, mostly flat terrain. A mass sprint was expected, and Lidl-Trek Future Racing led the German favorite Tim Torn Teutenberg into a perfect position for the sprint. However, in the final meters, De Schuyteneer managed to edge past Teutenberg.

De Schuyteneer’s teammate and fellow Belgian Jarno Widar had no problems during the flat stage and remains comfortably in the lead. Widar now only has to survive three more stages.
