With 3:58 remaining in the third quarter along with the Warriors leading 77-71, Curry setup for one more 3-pointer when the lights inside the building moved out, leading to a one-minute delay before they came forth. Curry, who had scored 35 points upward until then and appeared headed for his second straight 40-point outing, managed only two points in the last 16 minutes on 1-for-11 shooting, such as 0-for-6 from outside the arc.
And also the Pelicans, who entered the night games from a Western Conference play-in position, started on a run which kept their faint playoff hopes alive with a 108-103 success .
“I hadn’t seen that one before,” Curry said of these lights delay. “They tried to get me saying I shot it until the lights went out. Nonetheless, it is a weird situation, since we had been flowing a little bit, and I figure kinda after that it was sort of a rough offensive situation but — a tough game all the way around.”
ASM Global, which manages the venue, said it was”a brief technical error which has been identified immediately and rectified”
The Warriors followed Curry’s lead in moving ice-cold in the field after the lights came back on, scoring only 26 points in the last 16 minutes while shooting only 10-for-31 from the area.
How much of an effect did Curry believe the delay had down the stretch?
“It is tough to say,” he said. “But it was not so long as one that occurred in the Super Bowl that one year [a 34-minute delay because of a power outage in 2013]. Nevertheless, it was sort of bizarre just in general.
“But it is what it is.”
Trainers coach Steve Kerr stated he has witnessed a lights delay”perhaps a handful of times” throughout his career, but he didn’t believe the stoppage had some effect on his team’s play — with both teams playing the second night of a back-to-back.
“I don’t believe it played a role.”
Pelicans star forward Zion Williamson also said this was the first time he’d ever played in a match using a light delay, before recalling another stoppage that happened during his professional debut at the Las Vegas Summer League on July 5, 2019.
“I have been a part of a match in which an earthquake happened and stopped the match,” Williamson explained. “Been around a little bit.”
