The Americans won the final of the Women’s Ice Hockey Worlds against the Canadians (6-3) and thus dethroned the reigning double world champions on Sunday in Brampton (Canada).
The United States, whose last victory dates back to 2019, took advantage of penalties reported against the Canadian team at the very end of the match, to score three goals in 1 min 12 sec.
Hilary Knight scored a hat-trick (45, 56, 57), and Abbey Murphy (18), Caroline Harvey (45) and Cayla Barnes (58) each scored a goal.
The Canadians had however dominated the score for most of the meeting, thanks to Marie-Philip Poulin (6), who had opened the scoring, and Brianne Jenner (18, 29), who had scored twice.
The Americans remained on three defeats against their great rivals, during the last two Worlds and in the final of the Olympic tournament of the Beijing Olympics in February 2022.
Since the first edition of the Women’s World Cup in 1990, the United States have always participated in the final and have therefore won their tenth title in 22 finals.
