American sprinter Noah Lyles, world champion in the 100m, beat Christian Coleman for the first time in the 60m at the United States Indoor Championships on Saturday in Albuquerque (New Mexico).
Lyles continues his progress in this discipline: he dominated the final in 6 sec 43, his record and the best world time of the season, a hundredth of a second ahead of Coleman.
A great start specialist, Coleman is the world record holder in the discipline since his race in 6 sec 34 in Albuquerque in 2018.
Saturday, well in the lead after 40 meters, he saw Lyles rush at him in the very last strides, to beat him for the first time in six confrontations.
“I dreamed of the day I would improve my 60m. Every year I came and competed to go faster, faster, faster,” Lyles said after the race.
Former 200m specialist, Noah Lyles has transformed into a complete sprinter in recent seasons: he won three world titles (100, 200 and 4x100m) in Budapest last summer.
He is the favorite for the 60m at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow (March 1-3), where he is traveling with Coleman, before hoping to win his first Olympic title in Paris this summer.
“We are the best in the world. We’re going to make sure everyone knows who the real world champions are.”
In the absence of Sha’Carri Richardson, Aleia Hobbs dominated the women’s 60m in 7 sec 02.
Double Olympic champion and world weight record holder Ryan Crouser achieved the best world performance of the season with a throw of 22.80 m.
