Olimpia Milan struck a blow in view of the next Euroleague season by offering Nikola Mirotic, from FC Barcelona.
The strong winger, Montenegrin by birth and naturalized Spanish, has signed a three-season contract, until 2026, the Italian club said in its press release on Thursday.
Voted best player in the Euroleague in 2022, Mirotic, 33, missed part of the 2022-23 season with an Achilles tendon injury and finished the exercise with averages of 15.4 points and 4, 3 rebounds per game.
Passed by Real Madrid (2010-14), then the NBA (Chicago, New Orleans, Milwaukee), Mirotic had been playing since 2019 at FC Barcelona.
He was originally supposed to join the Serbian club Partizan Belgrade, but he gave it up “after being the target of threats and insults that surprised and hurt me a lot”, he explained on his social networks.
With Spain, he won Euro 2015 and the bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Olimpia Milan, coached by Ettore Messina, won their record 30th Italian league title last season, but did not make the Euroleague play-offs.
The Lombard club, owned by Italian designer Giorgio Armani, has won the most prestigious European title three times (1966, 1987, 1988), but never the Euroleague under this name.
