Unsurprisingly, Toulon lost heavily on the grounds of Glasgow (29-5) and is officially eliminated from all European competitions after this 0-point defeat. Despite a completely overhauled team, the RCT had nevertheless made a successful start to the match by progressing with ball in hand and trying to seek out the outside with a lively Tuicuvu and Villière in the first quarter of an hour. But without many executives (White, Biggar, Waisea and Jaminet were rested), the RCT lacked the experience to be realistic and folded from the first Scottish acceleration. If Mc Kay’s first try (14′) was refused for a screen in the center of the field, it was only a warning for Rowe’s try a few minutes later (21′). Taking advantage of the fixation offered by the Scottish forwards, skilful with the ball in hand in front of the defense, Rowe and Jones, in the wake of an inspired and sharp Tuipulotu, went to checkers twice in the first period (21′, 30′). The center of Australian origin also stood out by being directly involved in these two tests by being at the origin of the discrepancy. By his simple presence he monopolizes the attention of the defenders and maintains the lucidity to serve his partners launched at the right tempo. 3/4 Scots with formidable accuracy during the first act.
First 40 minutes also marked by the inability of the Toulonnais to realize their highlights. However, the start of the second period brought back hope for the RCT. Showing more desire and determination, the Toulonnais showed a sign of awakening with Drean’s try (47′). Dominant in the impacts with their forwards, Pierre Mignoni’s men decided to go wide with a long pass from Sinzelle to offer the try to his winger. A try which should have been refused for a forward pass from number 10 of the evening, not signaled by the referee. But this hopeful try was ultimately only a flash in the pan. The Scots regained control of the game a few moments later with Mc Kay’s try (59′) following a devastating charge from Dempsey. A match which was finally completely resolved a few seconds later with Huw Jones’ bonus try (61′). With a 19-point lead and faced with the impotence of Toulon, the spectators at Scotstoun Stadium quickly understood that the result was done. Ending this match without any bonus, the RCT even conceded a fifth try from Jones after the siren (82′).
Toulon is therefore officially eliminated from all European competitions and will have to concentrate only on the Top 14 this season. An exit through the back door after a nightmarish European campaign concluded with a 4th defeat in 4 games.
