Hungary qualified for Euro 2024 on Thursday by snatching a draw in the final moments against Bulgaria (2-2) in Sofia. The Hungarians, for whom one point was enough to qualify for the Euro which will take place in Germany in June 2024, scored the equalizing goal in the 97th minute and will participate in their third continental meeting in a row.
Thanks to this point obtained in a stadium behind closed doors and while violent clashes took place between Bulgarian supporters and the police outside the enclosure, Hungary became the ninth team qualified for Euro 2024. The men of Italian coach Marco Rossi are assured, with 15 points, of finishing in one of the first two places in Group G, even before the last day. The Hungarians were however afraid: after opening the scoring by Adam (10th), they were joined by the Bulgarians thanks to Dedev (24th) then overtaken by a penalty from Despodov (79th).
But at the end of added time, unfortunate Bulgaria defender Petkov headed a free kick into his own goal, giving his opponents a ticket to Germany. Eliminated in the first round in 2021, having hosted their meetings in the group stage, the Hungarians will try to do as well as in 2016, when they reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by Belgium (4- 0).
