Manchester City beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday in Tokyo, thanks to goals from England’s James McAtee and France’s Aymeric Laporte. 18-year-old French striker Mathys Tel kept hope alive for Bayern by equalizing late in the game (81st), but his compatriot defender Laporte, who came on, finally gave victory to the European champions (86th) . Attacking midfielder McAtee, 20 and on loan to Sheffield United last season, opened the scoring in the 21st minute.
The two European heavyweights spent the first quarter of an hour sizing each other up in sweltering conditions at Japan’s National Stadium in Tokyo. German coach Thomas Tuchel completely changed his eleven in the second half, while Pep Guardiola changed Citizen eight at the break.
City will play Atlético Madrid on Sunday in Seoul, South Korea, before returning to England to face Arsenal on August 6 in the Community Shield. Bayern will play one more match in Tokyo, against Japanese team Kawasaki Frontale, before flying to Singapore and facing Liverpool there on August 2. The German champions will then play their last friendly against Monaco, in Germany on August 7.
