Playmaker Marek Hamsik, a former Napoli player and record holder with Slovakia, announced on Thursday that he would retire at the end of the season with Trabzonspor in the Turkish league.

“It’s not an easy decision (…) but it was a wonderful adventure,” the 35-year-old told a press conference.

The Slovak, known for his Iroquois crest, announced his international retirement last year, after 15 years in the Slovak selection, of which he was the captain and top scorer. In 136 selections, he scored 206 goals and led Slovakia to the round of 16 of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and Euro-2016 in France.

In club, the midfielder has long been a pillar of the Italian team of Naples, with which he played 520 matches in all competitions, a record, between 2007 and 2019.

After a stint in China and Sweden, the Slovak joined Trabzonspor in June 2021 and was one of the great architects of the Black Sea club’s title last season, conquered 38 years after his last coronation.

In Turkey, the last day of the Süper Lig season is scheduled for June 6 and 7 and Marek Hamsik will bid farewell to the green rectangle.
