Borussia Dortmund striker Giovanni Reyna is not on the list, announced on Wednesday, of players selected by United States coach Gregg Berhalter for his return to the helm of the American team. Reyna and Berhalter had been at the center of a violent controversy during the World Cup in Qatar at the end of 2022. Berhalter, who led the United States to the round of 16 of the World Cup, eliminated by the Netherlands, n was not reappointed at the end of last year amid a domestic abuse case dating back to 1991.
Reyna’s parents, unhappy with their son’s little playing time in Qatar, had themselves alerted the American Federation about an argument that occurred in 1991, during which Berhalter had kicked his future wife, Rosalind.
Reyna hasn’t played since suffering a calf injury in the Nations League in June, but is back in training with Dortmund. Berhalter told Vanity Fair magazine, in an interview published the day before his roster was announced, that he still hadn’t spoken to Reyna since their World Cup row. The United States will play two friendly matches against Uzbekistan on September 9 in Saint-Louis (Missouri) then against Oman three days later in Saint-Paul (Minnesota).
