A revealing study. In its latest weekly letter, the CIES Football Observatory took an interest in the coaching profession, and more specifically in its precariousness, by examining the percentage of technicians dismissed by clubs during the 2022-2023 season in sixty leagues first division in the world. And the numbers are scary.

Of the 850 teams analyzed, 484 changed coaches during the year, a percentage of 56.9%. “The highest percentages were measured in three leagues from the former Yugoslavia (Bosnia, North Macedonia and Serbia), followed by a league from Central America (Costa Rica) and two from Africa (Algeria and Tunisia)”, says the study. For example, in the Premijer Liga (Bosnia and Herzegovina), 91.7% of coaches were fired!

As regards the five major European championships, the percentages are lower. “For the big-5, the values range from 55% in the Premier League (11 out of 20) to ”only” 35% in Serie A (7 out of 20), with 50% for Ligue 1 (10 out of 20) », says the CIES Football Observatory.

In addition, “clubs having changed coach at least once made the first substitution on average after 45.4% of matches, with a negative record of only 24.6% matches led by the coach who started the season in Romania”. In the five major leagues, these percentages vary between 56.6% (Liga) and 35.6 (Serie A); in Ligue 1, on average, technician changes took place after 40.8% of matches.
