On May 16, 2013, David Beckham, 38, retired at the Parc des Princes after the match between Paris-SG and Stade Brestois. The Manchester United legend’s time in the capital was very short. The former England international only played fourteen matches under the Parisian tunic, starting only five times in six months.
Ten years after the end of his career and his adventure at the Parc des Princes, the ex-Real Madrid midfielder surprised everyone by recognizing that his favorite jersey from the 90s was that of the great rival of PSG , that of Olympique de Marseille.
“My answer is going to be controversial, because I played for PSG at the end of my career, but there was a Marseille jersey that was all white, shiny, with three blue stripes,” he told Netflix for the release of a documentary dedicated to him. I don’t know how I ended up with an OM jersey as a child, but it was one of my favorite jerseys.
The former English midfielder was keen to recall the attachment and recognition he feels for the capital club. “I will always remember what they did for me, the way they treated me and the attitude of the PSG fans towards me. Even though I only stayed six months, I felt like I was being treated as if I had been there for 16 years and was part of this family.”
The atmosphere at the Parc des Princes also left an impression on the former AC Milan midfielder: “Everyone knows that I am a big football fan, so playing in this stadium knowing the history, the players who played here, Pauleta, Ronaldinho, David Ginola… All these great players played here, but the reason why I couldn’t wait to play at the Parc des Princes? It was the fans! The fans at this stadium create something incredible.”
