Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Giovanni Reyna was recalled Thursday by United States coach Gregg Berhalter for the first time since the controversy between the two men during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The American selection plays two friendly matches in October, against Germany in East Hartford (Connecticut) on the 14th, then against Ghana three days later in Nashville (Tennessee).
Berhalter, who led the United States to the round of 16 of the World Cup, was not reappointed at the end of last year amid a domestic violence case dating back to 1991.
Reyna’s parents, unhappy with their son’s little playing time in Qatar, had themselves alerted the American Federation about an argument that occurred in 1991, during which Berhalter had kicked his future wife, Rosalind.
Berhalter was cleared after an investigation by the federation and ultimately rehired as United States coach in June. He did not call up the injured Reyna for September’s friendly matches against Oman and Uzbekistan.
