Santos, the legendary Brazilian club where Pelé and Neymar played, was relegated to the second division on Wednesday evening after a home defeat against Fortaleza (1-2). Several videos show vehicles on fire around the Urbano-Caldeira stadium, better known as Vila Belmiro. Globo Esporte reports that player Steven Mendoza’s car was destroyed, targeted randomly amid the chaos. Police used tear gas to disperse the angry fans.
Neymar, Santos legend (2003-2013), had a thought for his former club on Instagram after the sad result on Wednesday evening. “Santos always. We will smile again…,” he wrote. The Brazilian is under contract with Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia but has not yet played a single match due to injury.
