The Formula 1 team McLaren announced on Wednesday the extension of the contract of its Australian driver Oscar Piastri until 2026.

Team principal Zak Brown said he was “happy to be able to continue with Oscar until the end of the 2026 season.” “He’s a very talented driver and he’s an asset to the team, so it’s great to continue together in the long term,” he added.

“I am delighted to extend my partnership with McLaren for several years,” commented the 22-year-old Australian driver. “I want to fight for the top positions on the grid with this team and I am excited about everything that has already been achieved to achieve this.”

Piastri, who joined the British team as a reserve driver in 2022, made his Formula 1 debut this season at the inaugural Grand Prix in Bahrain. He showed his potential in July, finishing fourth in the British Grand Prix and then second in the Belgian Grand Prix sprint race.

He took 7th place last Sunday in Singapore, where his teammate, Briton Lando Norris, finished on the second step of the podium behind Carlos Sainz Jr.
