Ibrahima Konaté comes out of a contrasting season. Collectively ups and downs with his Liverpool club but individually successful. At dusk, he found the Blues for two matches, against Gibraltar (June 16) then against Greece (June 19).

Invited by RMC Sport for the program Rothen ignites, the 24-year-old defender returned to his new role in Blues, he who has imposed himself since the international retirement of Raphaël Varane. With Dayot Upamecano, he asserts himself as a central hinge and today acts as boss. “It’s true that I’ve had this leadership side since my youth. I think it’s natural,” he says.

The native of Paris also returned to the fierce competition in Blues. France has a quality breeding ground at his post and Konaté knows it: “When you sit down and look on the sheet who is playing where, you say to yourself: “Ah yeah! There is competition”. Me, it makes me happy, because all these people, outside of football, are people I appreciate. I want them well too. Afterwards, when you’re on the ground, it’s war. Everyone wants their share of the cake,” he replied with fun.

Finally, another topic was discussed: the new role of “Captain Mbappé”. Asked about it, the Reds defender praises his behavior: “He is in the middle of the two generations. He manages to bridge the gap between us and them because he has experienced everything with them. He won the World Cup. He is someone who has a very good relationship with the coach. He is a very good captain, a unifier.
