Sarah-Léonie Cysique won the bronze medal in the under 57 kg category on Friday at the European Judo Championships in Montpellier.

The Frenchwoman, Olympic vice-champion in Tokyo in 2021, beat the German Pauline Starke for bronze by ippon.

She lost in the quarter-final against Serbian Marica Perisic, injuring her knee at the same time.

After receiving the green light from the medical staff, she managed to recover in repechage against the Georgian Eteri Liparteniali.

“I’m happy to have managed to bounce back and get a nice medal,” Cysique reacted. “I gave everything I had in the two fights I had left.”

Although she has still not won a European title, she now has four medals at continental level.
