The Spanish club Villarreal, currently 15th in La Liga with three defeats in four days, announced on Tuesday the dismissal of its coach Quique Setien, in post since October 2022: “Villarreal CF announces that the coach of the first team, Quique Setien, leaves the club,” we can read in a press release published by the club. “The club highlights his great professionalism and commitment and thanks him and his coaching team for taking charge in a complicated situation last season,” the text reads.
Setien arrived at the end of October to succeed Unai Emery, who left for Aston Villa after terminating his contract. “Under the leadership of the Cantabrian coach, the team had an excellent season, promoting many young people from the training center and qualifying for the Europa League after reaching fifth place in La Liga,” recalls the press release. The 64-year-old technician, who worked for Las Palmas and Betis Sevilla, was sacked in August 2020 by FC Barcelona after a mandate of only seven months. Football director Miguel Angel Tena is acting as interim director pending the appointment of a successor to Quique Setien.
