Atlético Madrid scored a third consecutive victory in La Liga on Sunday against Celta Vigo (1-0), allowing the Colchoneros to move closer to qualifying for the Champions League.

After having struggled for a long time with Spanish goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, Diego Simeone’s men found the fault with a high-class goal from Argentine midfielder Rodrigo de Paul: chest control, volley into the top corner (84th, 1-0).

A gem which places Atlético (4th) in a very favorable position in the race for C1, with eight points ahead of Athletic Bilbao (5th) three days before the end of the championship.

The rojiblanco club even temporarily comes back three lengths from FC Barcelona (3rd), which welcomes Real Sociedad on Monday (9 p.m.).

Author of a season too inconsistent to hope to get involved in the fight for the title, already acquired and celebrated by its rival Real on Sunday in the streets of the Spanish capital, Antoine Griezmann’s Atlético no longer really has any objective to pursue apart from maintaining its place in the top 4.

Celta Vigo (16th, 34 points) remains at the bottom of the table and not yet assured of remaining at the end of the season, after the victory of Cádiz (18th, 29 points) against Getafe (1-0).

Almeria (20th) and Granada (19th) are already officially relegated.
