Montpellier central defender Christopher Jullien suffers from a ruptured cruciate ligament in his right knee contracted on Sunday in Lens (2-2), during the 34th and final day of Ligue 1, the player announced on Wednesday, who is preparing for a long absence.

“The verdict is here. Rupture of the anterior cross,” he wrote on his X account. The former Toulousain (31 years old) was injured in the 80th minute of the match in Lens, following a harmless duel with an attacker Lensois.

Christopher Jullien, who underwent medical examinations on Tuesday, is preparing to begin a long convalescence, which usually lasts between six and eight months.

“Now we will have to be hardworking and patient to get back on the ground. The team and the family are present so all that remains is…,” he promised.

The athletic defender (1.91m), who arrived in Hérault in the summer of 2022 from Celtic Glasgow, is finishing a complicated season where he lost his starting place to the benefit of Swiss international Bécir Oméragic. He only played 20 games, including only 13 as a starter.

Frustrated by his playing time, Jullien had considered leaving Montpellier during the winter transfer window before giving it up and playing more often in the second part of the season.

Faced with his long-term absence, Montpellier now only has three professional central defenders, Malian internationals Kiki Kouyaté and Modibo Sagnan, and Oméragic.

Montpellier completed its 15th season in a row in Ligue 1 in 12th place after having achieved a good end to the year.
