The city of Marseille announced on Saturday that the rent paid by OM for the occupation of the Stade Vélodrome would increase to eight million euros per season in fixed part, compared to 6.5 million euros currently.
According to the municipality, the new occupancy agreement, which must still be voted on by the municipal council on December 15, covers three seasons and “brings more visibility and stability to both partners”.
“Thanks to this agreement, the City of Marseille will receive eight million euros in fixed rent, compared to 6.5 million euros compared to the last contract and five million in 2017,” explains the city in a press release. The rent also includes a variable part, the amount of which has not been specified.
“I would like to thank Olympique de Marseille for this new agreement. The city and its club are inseparable,” declared the city’s mayor Benoît Payan, quoted in the press release. “In three years, we have increased the rent of the Stade Vélodrome by three million euros: this is extra money for the Marseillaises and the Marseillais and a fairer return on investment,” he added. . Even before becoming mayor of Marseille, Mr. Payan denounced rent paid by OM which he considered insufficient. OM did not comment on this announcement from Marseille town hall.
In the middle of the week, the Marseille administrative court must render its decision on a request from OM, which calls for the cancellation of four “rent installments for the provision of the Vélodrome stadium” during the 2019/2020 seasons. and 2020/2021, marked by health restrictions linked to Covid. The dispute concerns around eight million euros.
