It arouses desire. Leader of the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, and uncompromising since the start of the season (no defeats), Xabi Alonso has established himself in recent months as one of the most popular coaches on the football planet. And logically, Liverpool FC and Bayern Munich, two of his former clubs which will change coaches next summer, are interested in his profile for the next year. Problem: the Spaniard is under contract with the Rouge et Noir until June 2026. And according to the information revealed by Sky Deutschland, he does not have a release clause (at least for the moment). On the other hand, he would have “a verbal promise from Bayer officials that he will be able to move this summer”.

Thus, to secure his services, the two clubs will have to (logically) put their hands in their pockets. Still according to our German colleagues, Bayer Leverkusen would expect a sum of between €15 and €25 million to release their technician next summer. A significant amount (especially for a coach)…but which remains accessible for these two behemoths of world football. Sky Deutschland specifies, however, that things could be different in a year and a half. Indeed, in the summer of 2025, “a written exit clause could then apply, which should amount to around 15 million euros”.

Xabi Alonso, 42, would “still be willing to join the German record champion [Bayern, editor’s note] this summer and work there as head coach”, according to Sky Deutschland. It remains to be seen whether the Munich team, which announced that it was going to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season, will be ready to take out the checkbook to bring him back to Munich. One thing is certain, the ex-midfielder is the preferred candidate of Bavarian leaders, in particular of the new sporting director Max Eberl. Another coach would be in the good books of Bayern Munich: it is Roberto De Zerbi, the very promising coach of Brighton
