Croatian central defender Josko Gvardiol, 21, has signed a five-year contract with Manchester City, the English champions and Champions League winners announced on Saturday. The player arrives from the German club Leipzig with which he won two German Cups. Trained at Dinamo Zagreb, Gvardiol joined the Bundesliga in 2021.
The amount of the transfer has not been specified by Manchester City but could amount to 90 million euros according to British media. This transfer would make Gvardiol the second most expensive defender in history behind England international Harry Maguire, who was signed by Manchester United for around 93 million euros in 2019.
After his compatriot Mateo Kovacic, who arrived from Chelsea this summer, Gvardiol is City’s second signing, crowned in the Premier League and the Champions League last season. Gvardiol (21 caps) was one of the great revelations of the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. Sparkling, he took third place in the tournament with Croatia.
