German Sandro Schwarz, who spent time in the Bundesliga and Russia, has been named coach of the New York Red Bulls, the MLS club announced on Thursday.

He replaces Troy Lesesne, recruited in May after the departure of Gerhard Struber to Red Bull Salzburg. A 45-year-old former midfielder, Schwarz made more than 200 appearances in 11 seasons in Germany as a player before becoming a coach in 2009.

He was notably at the head of Mainz, his hometown, between 2017 and 2019, Dynamo Moscow (2020-2022) and Hertha Berlin. Arriving in the summer of 2022 in the German capital, he was sacked in April when the club was bottom of the Bundesliga. In New York, he will have the task of leading the club to a second national title after that of 1996.
