October 25, 2023 will go down in history as the day Victor Wembanyama stepped on the NBA floor for the first time. After months, even years of waiting from the American public, the former Nanterre player played his first match with the San Antonio Spurs against Dallas. A match which ended in a defeat for the Texans, but that is not the main thing.
Expected as the Messiah in the NBA, the young man’s “highlights” already had millions of views across the Atlantic before his arrival in the United States. Drafted in first position, which had never happened for a French player, the expectation around him is immense. So much so that the jersey from his first match was put up for auction on Wednesday.
Organized by the famous auction house Sotheby’s, based in New York, the auction also included jerseys of Lebron James, Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic. But, despite the presence of the jerseys of these superstars, it was that of the young Frenchman who pushed a buyer to pay a crazy sum. While its price was estimated between $80,000 and $120,000, it ended up being a much higher figure: $762,000. An amount which well represents the expectations weighing on the shoulders of the new Spurs star. The San Antonio franchise faces the Los Angeles Clippers on the night of Wednesday to Thursday.
