Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus will miss the start of the Premier League season with Arsenal due to knee surgery, his manager Mikel Arteta said on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately he had a minor operation this morning,” explained the Gunners coach after their friendly match against Monaco at the Emirates Stadium (1-1, 5-4 on penalties).

“He had discomfort in one knee which was causing him problems and he had to operate to fix it. It’s not something serious but he should be out for a few weeks I think,” added Arteta, speaking of a “hard blow” for the club.

After an excellent start to the season with Arsenal last year, Jesus had suffered three months of absence due to a right knee injury suffered during the World Cup in Qatar.

Arsenal will play the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday against Manchester City, before starting their Premier League season with the reception of Nottingham on Saturday August 12.
