Liverpool secured an incredible 2-1 success at Newcastle (2-1), a rival in the fight for the final podium, on Sunday by overthrowing the Magpies with a brace from incoming Darwin Nunez despite being more than an hour long inferiority.
The matchday three clash took a sharp turn in less than three minutes with Anthony Gordon (25th) opening the scoring for Newcastle and the direct red card received by captain Virgil van Dijk (28th), guilty of tripping Alexander Isak.
In the hostile atmosphere of St James’ Park, the Reds came under unrelenting pressure from their hosts for the majority of the encounter before unexpectedly overturning the game.
Entering in the 77th minute, Darwin Nunez equalized four minutes later (81st), on his team’s first shot on target since van Dijk’s expulsion. And the Uruguayan striker doubled the bet in added time (93rd).
Liverpool move into fourth place with seven points, two points behind leaders Manchester City. Newcastle, beaten by the Citizens last week, is thirteenth with only three units.
