The Everton and Nottingham Forest clubs face a sanction from an independent commission, after admitting that they broke the financial rules of the Premier League at the end of the 2022-23 season, the body announced on Monday. “Everton FC and Nottingham Forest FC have each confirmed to the Premier League that they have breached the league’s profitability and viability rules,” the Premier League said in a statement.

“This is due to losses incurred above the set thresholds, at the end of the 2022-23 season. Both cases were referred to the chair of the dedicated judicial panel, who will appoint separate commissions to determine the appropriate sanction” for each, she said.

According to the Premier League, elite clubs can lose a maximum of 105 million pounds (around 120 million euros) over a period of three seasons, or 35 million pounds per financial year. Currently in the fight for maintenance, Everton (17th) and Nottingham Forest (15th) risk, among other sanctions, a withdrawal of points in the ranking. However, Everton has already had 10 points deducted at the start of the season, for having committed the same offense at the end of the 2021-22 financial year. Sanction for which the Toffees appealed.

While awaiting the resulting decision, they are languishing at the bottom of the standings, one point away from relegation. An additional withdrawal of points would make their operation to remain in the elite even more complicated. Nottingham Forest is four points from the red zone.
