German striker Timo Werner has joined Tottenham for the remainder of the season on loan from RB Leipzig, the north London club announced on Tuesday.
“We are very pleased to announce the signing of Timo Werner,” Spurs announce on their website, “he joins the club on loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy in the summer.” According to British media, Tottenham will cover Werner’s salary until the end of the season and could recruit him permanently at the end of the loan for a sum estimated at around 17 million euros.
The 27-year-old will return to the Premier League grounds, which he played between 2020 and 2022 in the Chelsea jersey, with a mixed record but a Champions League won in 2021 in the final against Manchester City. In Leipzig, Werner was little used by coach Marco Rose who, at the forefront of the attack, installed a doublet composed of Yussuf Poulsen and Loïs Openda.
The international with 24 goals scored in 57 caps hopes to gain playing time in London with the ambition of participating in Euro-2024 in Germany, a bet for someone who has not played for the squad since March 2023.
At Spurs, the center forward position is occupied by Richarlison. After a lackluster start to the season, the Brazilian has been to his advantage in recent weeks, notably scoring five goals in his last five appearances in the Premier League. On the attacking front, Tottenham is stripped by the long-term absence of James Maddison, injured in an ankle in early November, and the participation of South Korean captain Heung-Min Son in the Asian Nations Cup.
