On July 6, the Paris Court ordered Viagogo to pay nearly 400,000 euros to France 2023, the Public Interest Group in charge of organizing the next Rugby World Cup. The online ticket buying and selling site was accused of selling tickets without authorization for the matches which will take place from September 8 to October 28.
In a press release, France 2023 “welcomes the decision” and wishes to recall that it “has a monopoly on the sale of tickets to attend the 2023 Rugby World Cup”.
The Court for its part recalled that the monopoly enjoyed by the GIP aims “to protect fans of rugby union against the increase in the cost of tickets linked to their resale”, as well as “the security of the event, in particular by controlling of the identity of the spectators”.
The only authorized online sale of tournament tickets is that made on the official website https://tickets.rugbyworldcup.com which also has an official resale service.
