A sad first. Accustomed to bench exits, Grant Williams was experiencing his first tenure with South Africa. At 27, the scrum half started against Argentina for this last Rugby Championship match.
A first that turned into a nightmare. While Santiago Carreras kicked off for Argentina, Grant Williams easily received the ball in front of his in-goal and cleared his camp. Mounted like an arrow, Juan Cruz Mallia tries to counter him but fails to stop his effort.
The Toulousain then arrives full ball on his opponent. The Argentinian three-quarters, with a blow to the buttocks in the head, violently brings down the scrum-half. After several minutes of stoppage of play, Grant Williams went out on a stretcher. Faf de Klerk, usual holder of the position, came into play.
Note that Andrew Brace had not stopped the game after this very violent shock. The referee blew the whistle seconds later after a Springbok foul in a maul. The Argentinians left with a ball to play five meters from the opposing in-goal.
