Scott Robertson, the future coach of the All Blacks after the World Cup in France, has put forward the idea that in the future players could be called up from abroad. A hypothesis that Ian Foster, the current coach of New Zealand, has completely swept away. “If I look at it from the Blacks’ point of view, a purely selfish point of view, it always made academic sense (not to select players playing out of the country). But for New Zealand rugby as a whole, I think it would be a disaster. We have a Super Rugby competition which has fed our team for many, many years. I don’t think it’s perfect, but that’s the way of development,” he said.
And the Kiwi technician added: “From the moment we allow it, we know that the global demand for our players will continue to grow, and I think our league could lose its best players.”
