Scotland second-row Jonny Gray is “very doubtful” for the World Cup after dislocating his kneecap while playing for Exeter Chiefs on Sunday, club manager Rob Baxter has said.

Gray, who has 77 caps with Scotland, was injured in the Champions Cup semi-final lost 47-28 by Exeter against La Rochelle in Bordeaux. “This is tendinitis in the patella which was detected during a World Cup match in Bordeaux (47-28),” said Rob Baxter, Scotland team manager .

“It’s a patella tendon injury, he dislocated his kneecap. Fortunately, the other main ligaments of the knee are all stable”. “It is a relatively complex injury to the patella tendon, which will require surgery this week, and a relatively long rehabilitation period,” Baxter added. The World Cup will be held in France from September 8 to October 28. Scotland are in Pool B and begin their campaign against defending champions South Africa.
