The first amateur rugby world championship began this Saturday in the South Region between 16 clubs representing the 16 major nations. In Pool A, the players from Rugby Club Digne-les-Bains took a big step forward towards qualifying for the quarter-finals by beating the Uruguayans from Carrasco Rugby Club, 19-14. The French representatives had previously lost (the qualifying matches take place in 20 minutes) against the New Zealand club Te Awamutu, 21-9.
In Pool B, Hamilton Sea Point (South Africa) dominated the Scots from Oban 26-0. The Tongan team of Kolomotu’a won 26-6 against the Romanians of GRP RC. Before losing to South African amateurs 10-0. In Pool C (in Arles), the Australian Southern Lions dominated the Welsh of Llandaff 38 to 5 and the Rhinos of California the Georgians of Devebi 26 to 5. Georgians again beaten, this time by the Welsh, 12 to 10 .
Finally, in Pool D, the first match between the Rubgy Lions (England) and Kamaishi Rugby (Japan) was largely dominated by the English 36 to 12. The second match opposed Roldan Rugby Club (Argentina) to the Cobs
