Former Italian international Daniele De Rossi has been named coach of AS Roma until the end of the current season, replacing Portuguese Jose Mourinho, who was sacked earlier today, the Italian 1st division club announced on Tuesday .
“Daniele De Rossi has been appointed coach of the first team until June 30, 2024,” the club wrote on its X account (ex-Twitter).
De Rossi, 40, wore the Roma jersey for 18 seasons between 2001 and 2019, before hanging up his boots in 2020 after a few months in Argentina in the Boca Juniors jersey.
World champion with Italy in 2006 (117 caps, 21 goals), the former midfielder has a relatively modest record with Roma: two editions of the Italian Cup (2007, 2008) and the Italian Super Cup. Italy 2007.
His coaching career is just as modest: he was part of the management of the Italian team for a few months (2021-22) then managed between October 2022 and February 2023 the SPAL which was then playing in the 2nd division and which was relegated to Serie C at the end of the season.

Mourinho had been in office since July 2021: he gave Roma the first edition of the Europa Conference League (C4) in 2022 and led them to the Europa League final last season.
