AS Roma confirmed on Thursday its coach Daniele De Rossi, who replaced Portuguese José Mourinho in January, in his role beyond the current season. “After meeting Daniele De Rossi on Wednesday afternoon, we are happy to announce that he will continue to hold his position as coach beyond the 2023-24 season,” the owners of the team said in a statement. “Since taking charge of the team, he has had a positive impact on the club and continued to write his extraordinary story with Roma,” they added. The duration of his new contract has not been specified. Aged 40, De Rossi, former emblematic player of Roma where he spent almost his entire career (2001-19), succeeded José Mourinho in January with a contract expiring at the end of the season.
Roma was then 9th in Serie A. It is now 5th and well on its way to qualifying for the next Champions League, since Italy should recover a fifth place for the C1 thanks to its UEFA coefficient for the season.
Under the leadership of De Rossi who had until then only coached SPAL (2022-23), Roma won eight of their eleven league matches. The capital club hosts AC Milan in the quarter-final second leg of the Europa League on Thursday after winning the first leg 1-0 at San Siro.
